Babcock Labs:
An Active Member of Your Community
When you’ve been a member of the community for as long as Babcock Laboratories, you understand your obligation to give back to it. Each year Babcock Labs makes contributions to organizations that support education, research and community growth.
“We recognize that we have a responsibility to educate within our field as well as encourage future leaders. We serve as a valuable resource for the industry and the local community by volunteering for projects, making donations, and providing services to students,” says CEO Allison Mackenzie.
This past year, Babcock Labs donated to programs such as Riverside Against Drugs and Dollars for Scholars. The lab also supported organizations such as the American Cancer Society, the American Red Cross, the Rotary Foundation, the Water Education Foundation, and the Foothill AIDS Project.
Babcock team members regularly speak at ACWA and CWEA events supporting professional development and environmental industry education in the water and wastewater fields. In line with Babcock Lab’s belief in furthering education and developing careers, this past November Ms. Mackenzie participated in the Ground Water Institute for Teachers program through the American Ground Water Trust, sponsored by Western Municipal Water District. She was involved in the lecture series for teacher training and informed local teachers about the role laboratories play in the industry as well as the potential for careers for young people in water testing.
“It’s always an incredible experience to be involved in educational projects,” says Mackenzie. “There is no greater feeling than being able to provide resources and knowledge to inquiring minds. You not only have impact on the industry, you have the opportunity to have impact on a life.”
Since the establishment of the University of California, Riverside campus, Babcock Labs has played a significant role in supporting the university and its students. The lab endorses the UCR Science Circle, providing scholarships and participating in a science lecture series for the public. It makes a strong effort to support as many science projects as possible. This past year the lab sponsored and provided laboratory analysis services to a team of UCR Chemical and Environmental Engineering students who are competing in an international environmental design contest. The competition is hosted by New Mexico State University’s Institute for Energy and the Environment and sponsored by WERC (Waste-management Education and Research Consortium). Each team in the contest develops a technology that can help solve an environmental issue.
These are only a few of the organizations and projects Babcock Labs supported in 2011, and 2012 will bring many more opportunities for the laboratory to act as a responsible partner in furthering education, developing careers, and equipping the leaders of tomorrow. Babcock Labs
believes there is always room for growth and therefore resolves to always be an active part of the community.
